February Report

It was an early start when our members fished on board Clive Jukes’ boat “Smuggler of Braye” out of the port of Exmouth last Saturday.
A rather foggy start saw the club members settling down for the 3 ½ hour run out to a distant wreck on the far side of the English Channel. But it was not long before the fog cleared leaving us basking in brilliant sunshine.
The target species was Pollack which came in a steady stream once we reached the wreck site. Most drifts over the wreck produced good sized fish in double figures. In spite of an awkward southerly wind across the tide and a bit of a choppy sea our skipper maintained a series of accurate drifts over the wreck.

A total of fifty two Pollack were shared between the twelve anglers on board. The biggest fish prize went to Ivan Park with a Pollack a shade under 20lbs.
For early February the weather was perfect with sunshine and mild temperatures all day.

Members returned home tired but perhaps looking forward to some nice fish suppers.

The highlight of the day was being escorted by a pod of dolphins which decided to accompany the boat for a short while on the way back to Exmouth.

February's second trip out with Smuggler was unfortunatley cancelled due to bad weather.

The overall points winner was Ivan Park with 80 points, followed by Andy Gorrie with 70 points. In third place was Rob Choules with 60 points. Also caught were pouting, a gurnard and a whiting.
